Long has there been debate over the perfect hair washing schedule. We are often told that less is more and washing too frequently can be detrimental to our hair and scalp. As a hairdresser myself, I have been preaching to my clients that two to three times a week is the optimum shampoo schedule. I have told my clients that their natural oils are good for them and that washing your hair too frequently can cause our bodies to produce more oil. Upon reflection I have realised I had no actual reasoning or research behind this recommendation, I was merely relaying to others what I had been taught myself. As a hairdresser I have watched this happen countless times. You soon learn that it is your job as the stylist to lead the client into giving you the gems of information you need. However this can sometimes be a long and tiresome experience, like drawing blood from a stone. The consultation is the most important part of service, if ever an error is made, quite often the problem will stem back to the consultation. So if all party members make the most of the consultation time, we can be sure to avoid a “blah” result.
